How do children of immigrant parents learn to express their emotions, and what factors influence this process?
Project Goals
• To investigate the processes through which children of immigrant parents develop their emotional expression.
• To examine the role of immigrant parents' emotional expression, cultural values, and communication styles in shaping their children's emotional development.
• To provide insights to help immigrant parents better support their children’s emotional development.

Research Method
• Semi-structured interviews with 10 children of immigrant parents, ages 18-25
• Inductive coding using NVivo 14
Key Findings
Emotional expression is influenced by parents’ demonstration of the following traits:
• The strength of their personal bond with their child;
• Their level of communication with their child;
• Their responses to their child’s displays of emotions.
This study concludes that all three characteristics play a role in teaching children to openly express their emotions as young adults.
